Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are paper-thin shells of porcelain that Dr. Ovsepian bonds to your natural permanent teeth. Some people only need one or two veneers, but Dr. Ovsepian and the team usually recommend getting between six and eight because it promotes a more balanced and symmetrical smile.

What types of issues can veneers cover up?

Dr. Ovsepian and the team use veneers to cover various oral imperfections, including:

  • Pointy teeth
  • Unusually shaped teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Stains and discoloration
  • Broken or chipped teeth

You might also benefit from veneers if you have a noticeable gap between your teeth.

Can anyone get veneers?

To determine if you qualify for veneers, Dr. Ovsepian conducts an oral exam and asks what you like and dislike about your smile.

If he discovers any cavities or determines you can benefit from orthodontics, Dr. Ovsepian might recommend deep cleaning or treatment with Invisalign® before moving forward. These prerequisite procedures ensure your teeth are healthy enough to withstand the application of veneers.

What does getting veneers involve?

At Plenty O’Smiles, getting dental veneers takes two appointments.

First visit

If your teeth and gums are healthy, Dr. Ovsepian prepares your teeth for veneers. He administers a local anesthetic and carefully removes a thin layer of enamel from each tooth.

Afterward, Dr. Ovsepian takes digital impressions of your mouth. He sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that designs and manufactures your veneers.

Second visit

When the dental laboratory completes your veneers, you return to Plenty O’Smiles. Dr. Ovsepian administers a local anesthetic, lines up the veneers with your teeth, and bonds them in place. Then, he polishes your veneers and provides care instructions.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers last an average of between 12 and 15 years*, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan with good oral hygiene. Dr. Ovespian and the team recommend:

  • Brushing twice daily
  • Flossing your teeth before going to bed
  • Avoiding bad habits like nail-biting and opening packaging with your teeth
  • Visiting Plenty O’ Smiles twice a year for an exam
  • Wearing a mouthguard during sports and other physical activities
